Not re-signing Arthur Rhodes means the Reds, who had been dealing with zero flexibility in their budget, suddenly have some.
General manager Walt Jocketty said the Reds' offer to Rhodes was similar to the one Rhodes signed the Rangers. The Rangers' deal is for $4 million for 2010 with a vesting option that could pay Rhodes another $4 million in 2011.
With decent pitching depth, the Reds will look elsewhere to spend that money.
"What we're looking for is a veteran outfielder, preferably a left-handed hitting outfielder, and an infielder who can back up at shortstop," Jocketty said.
Jocketty confirmed that the Reds had spoken to agents for both left fielder Scott Podsednik and shortstop Edgar Renteria.
