When the Nationals lost first baseman Adam Dunn in free agency, they also re-established a need they filled two years ago by signing the slugger in free agency: a left-handed power hitter.
The Nationals signed Dunn in 2009 after a search for a lefty slugger that first led them to a pursuit of Mark Teixeira. When Washington couldn't get him, Dunn became the next best option, and he hit 76 homers in two years with the Nationals. Now, though, he is a member of the White Sox, and the Nationals are without a left-handed power bat.
At the moment, the team's lineup would include two lefties—Nyjer Morgan and Roger Bernadina—and switch-hitter Danny Espinosa. But Bernadina hit only 12 homers last year, Morgan hit none and Espinosa played in the majors for a month.
