Much has been written and said about the Brewers upgrading their rotation this winter with the acquisitions of right-handers Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum, and rightfully so.
But general manager Doug Melvin has done a significant overhaul of his relief corps as well.
The latest move by Melvin was to sign veteran free agent Takashi Saito to a one-year deal. Saito, 40, went 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 56 appearances last season for Atlanta and will provide insurance for closer John Axford in the late innings.
Saito also provides insurance should veteran right-hander LaTroy Hawkins not make a complete recovery from shoulder surgery. Hawkins signed a two-year free agent deal last winter to serve as a setup man for closer Trevor Hoffman, who eventually ceded that role to...
