Mets ace Johan Santana will have shoulder surgery. The Mets said Friday that an MRI a day earlier showed the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner has a torn anterior capsule on the front and bottom of his pitching shoulder. New York said its anticipates the left-hander will be able to resume throwing in the spring.

But since Lidge has endured elbow tightness earlier this season, requiring two trips to the disabled list and two cortisone shots, it's no guarantee Lidge will be 100 percent healthy.

What the Phillies can find solace in is the security blanket in the bullpen known as Ryan Madson. When the Phillies saw their 10-0 lead shrink to 10-6 on Wednesday, Madson was called on for the fifth time in six games. He responded by retiring the only two batters he has faced.

Despite being used in 18 of the Phillies' last 26 games, Madson hasn't looked like a tired reliever as much as he's resembled a dominant one.

The first start for Jenrry Mejia, last Saturday in Chicago, was a nerve-wracking occasion, if not for the 20-year-old pitcher then for the Mets and everyone around him.

Mejia's mother was flown in from the Dominican Republic. And the Mets may have been even more nervous than she was because they were getting their first look at Mejia in the rotation.

When it was over, Mejia had absorbed a loss, giving up four runs in five innings. Now, he hopes to settle in as he makes his second start Friday.

"I want to get a win," said Mejia, who was 0-2 in 30 relief appearances earlier this season before heading to the minor leagues to stretch out to become a starter again. "I want to get better."

Hill had his second Tommy John surgery June 24, 2009. His first was in Sept. 16, 2004, when he was with the Montreal Expos.

When Ryan Doumit learned the Pirates had acquired Chris Snyder on July 31 to become their main catcher, he was shocked, as he put it.

If he also had known then that the team also would add several right fielders—the other position he was told he would play, in addition to catching—he surely would have thought his time as an everyday player had reached an end.

There was one good piece of news for the Padres on Thursday before the Giants halved their lead in the National League West to a single game.

It appears "super sub" Jerry Hairston Jr. will return from the disabled list on schedule Sunday.

Hairston tested his sprained right elbow Thursday, throwing for the first time since the pain became unbearable Aug. 26.

"After throwing, I'm extremely pleased and a little bit surprised," he said. "This was the best-case scenario. I felt great."

Hairston has started at five different positions this season, and the Padres are 63-39 with him in the starting lineup. They are 3-12 since he was injured. Although most of his starts were at shortstop and second, Hairston can also play third and the corner outfield spots.
