Bourn's return close
Center fielder Michael Bourn, out since March 19, could be back
to action as early as Friday, when the
Astros host the Orioles, after a
favorable progress report regarding his oblique strain,
Astros manager Brad Mills said.
Lance Berkman took longer than expected to heal from a bruised left knee, and when team physician David Lintner examined the joint, he called for surgery to remove loose particles.
The procedure was performed Saturday, and Berkman was expected to miss two to four weeks. That left him questionable for opening day.
"It's not a sharp pain," Berkman said before the operation. "It's just an achy, constant thing."
With the soreness not going away, the Astros decided to go ahead with the surgery in the hopes that they could get it out of the way and have him ready for the season opener April 5.
"I felt like there was a pretty good chance from the first episode that we might have to get this done," Berkman said.
Berkman injured the knee in a baserunning drill early in spring training and was forced to miss the Grapefruit League opener. He played five games after the injury, getting the knee drained twice as it continued to swell up.
"When it was diagnosed as a contusion, the hope was that it would resolve non-surgically," general manager Ed Wade said. But that was not the case.
In Berkman's absence, utility infielders Geoff Blum and Jeff Keppinger will see time at first base, as will non-roster invitee Chris Shelton. Blum had already started once before the call for surgery. He was expected to play all over the infield this year.
